The Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society's collection of local artifacts, genealogical information and general research materials is located in the Heritage Room at the W.I.S.H. Centre.  The Heritage Room provides visitors with the history of Chatham's Black Community after escaping slavery.  Their achievements and their struggles are chronicled through dramatizations, slide presentations and videos.

The Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society is pleased to announce there will be a
John Brown Seminar on Sat. , May 3, 2003 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the W.I.S.H. Centre, 177 King St. East, Chatham, ON Canada N7M 3N1   Phone (519) 354-5248   Guest speakers:  Vincent DeForest from National Parks Service, Washington, D.C.  Topic - Underground Railroad; Louis DeCaro - Author of "From the Midst of You" a book about the religious side of John Brown. Topic - John Brown; David Morris - Portrayal of John Brown; Michele Sweeting-DeCaro singing John Brown Hymn.  There will also be a signing of the twinning agreement  by representatives of Harpers Ferry West Virginia and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. Tickets: $40. Cdn; $30. US.  Morning coffee/snack break and afternoon meal included in price.

The Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society is a Non-profit organization, which was founded in 1992 and incorporated in 1994.  We are an affiliated society of the Ontario Historical Society, which was founded in 1888.  Membership is open to anyone who is a citizen or legal resident of Canada or the United States, who supports the purposes of the Society.  More information and classes of membership can be found here.
